Choosing a POS is a bigger decision than choosing a rate

Your POS touches almost everything: how fast the line moves, how tips and tax are handled, what inventory you think you have, and how many hours you spend on reports. Switching later is painful, so it's worth getting right the first time.

We'll ask how you take orders, how many stations and staff you'll have, whether you need tableside ordering, online ordering, inventory by variant, appointments or memberships. Then we narrow the field to a couple of platforms that fit, show you total monthly cost (software, hardware and processing together), and set the one you choose up properly.

  • Restaurant: tables, tabs, modifiers, kitchen printers or screens
  • Retail: SKUs, barcodes, variants, inventory counts
  • Services: appointments, deposits, memberships
  • Online ordering and gift cards where supported
  • Employee permissions and time clock
  • Menu or product import done for you

What a good POS setup includes

Hardware is the easy part. Setup is where most problems start.

Right-sized hardware

One counter station or several, handhelds for tableside or line-busting, customer-facing displays and kiosks.

Menu and catalog build

Items, modifiers, categories, taxes and pricing loaded before go-live instead of on a Friday night.

Cash discount ready

Dual pricing or cash discount configured on the POS, with matching receipts and signage.

Online ordering

Pickup and delivery ordering that flows into the same POS on platforms that support it.

Staff training

A walkthrough for you and your managers, plus a quick-reference sheet for the team.

Go-live support

Test transactions, printer and network checks, and someone to call opening week.

Three ways to price card processing

There's no single best model. We'll show you each one priced against your real numbers, then you choose.

01

Flat rate

One percentage plus a per-sale fee on every card. Easy to read, but you pay the same rate on a cheap debit card as on a premium rewards card.

  • Predictable
  • Simple statements
  • Often costs more as volume grows

Fits: low volume, seasonal or brand-new sellers

02

Interchange-plus

You pay the card networks' wholesale cost (interchange and assessments) plus a fixed, disclosed markup. Every layer shows on your statement.

  • Most transparent
  • Markup stays fixed
  • Usually lowest cost at higher volume

Fits: established businesses, larger tickets, B2B

03

Cash discount / dual pricing

Your posted prices account for card costs, and customers paying cash get a lower price. Card sales help cover processing instead of your margin.

  • Offsets much of your processing cost
  • Clear signage and receipts
  • Not a surcharge

Fits: restaurants, auto, retail, service shops

Why business owners work with Cedarline

We're a small, independent agent. That means fewer layers between you and the person who set up your account.

One person who answers

You work with Tony directly, from the first statement review to go-live and after. No call-center queue to start.

Pricing you can read

Every quote shows the rate, per-item fee, monthly fees and any equipment terms in writing before you sign.

Options, not one platform

We compare programs from several partner processors and POS platforms, so the setup fits your business instead of the other way around.

Set up correctly

Cash discount signage, receipt settings, tip and tax settings, and test transactions are handled before you go live.

Get set up in three steps

From first call to first sale, without the guesswork.

  1. Send a statement or tell us your plans

Existing business? Send one recent processing statement. Opening soon? Tell us what you'll sell and when.

  2. Compare your options

You get a side-by-side of pricing models, equipment and terms, priced against your numbers.

  3. Go live, tested

Approval, equipment programming, signage and test transactions, done before you rely on it.

Approval timing depends on the processor's underwriting. Most complete applications get a decision in a few business days.

Frequently asked questions

Which POS brands do you work with?

We place systems from several established POS platforms through our partner processors. Availability depends on your industry and the processing program, so we recommend specific options after we understand your business.

Can I keep my current POS and just change processing?

Sometimes. Some POS systems work with many processors; others are locked to one. We'll check yours before recommending anything.

Is POS hardware free?

Some programs include equipment at no upfront cost with a qualifying processing agreement. Others are lower-cost processing with hardware you buy. We'll show both so you can compare total cost.

How far ahead should a new business set up a POS?

Ideally 30 to 60 days before opening. That leaves time for approval, shipping, menu or catalog build and a test run. See our new business guide.

Not sure what you're paying, or what you'll need?

Send a recent statement or tell us about the business you're opening. You'll get a plain-English breakdown and options, with no cost or obligation.
